| Cycling around the lanes of Kent, you will frequently come across examples of the old type of road sign known as fingerposts. The earlier examples of which can still be found. These were made of cast iron pointing the way to the next village or town with various distances. These early signs are very different from the modern ones which are made of aluminium with the lettering stuck on. Many of the earlier examples have been removed or vandalised, but the photos below show a few local examples. In 1921 the Ministry of Transport provided a model for fingerposts, it being recommended that the local highway authority include its name as part of the design, this gave a little variety in designs across the country. Here in Kent you will frequently see a top ring above the arms showing the local council. |
